The chemical, oil and gas industry has a large installed base of aging electric motors. While there are numerous reasons to justify upgrading this critical equipment, there are also a number of risks and decisions involved in doing so. Some of these include: changes in dimensions, new industry standards, safety in design, efficiency pros and cons, and existing infrastructure. This webinar will address these topics using lessons learned in the field to help those considering upgrading their equipment.
We're pleased to announce the expansion of the Raptor tire coupling product line, designed to deliver up to 5.9x longer coupling life, to include sizes E100, E120 and E140, with a maximum torque rating of 340,340 in-lb. The Raptor coupling utilizes patented WingLock™ technology, an optimized elastomeric element designed to provide longer driven equipment life and increased reliability. This technology increases surface area at the most critical regions of the element, resulting in higher bond strength, improved fatigue resistance, and significantly longer coupling life than competitive urethane designs.
We are proud to announce the latest version of the Cooling Tower Wizard (3.0.0); an easy-to-use sizing and selection program for Direct Drive Cooling Tower (DDCT) Motor & Drive packages. The new version provides users a stock motor and drive solution as well as a custom designed package based on specific application parameters. The new version also includes an annual operating cost comparison between a new direct drive package and a traditional gearbox or belted solution.
Reliability and maintenance engineers can improve up- time and save money on both long-term maintenance and downtime costs by properly diagnosing and correcting bear- ing vibration issues when they exceed their acceptable lim- its. is requires inspecting the housing as well as the liner for wear, and replacing them as a pair when the housing is worn, so that wear-in between the mating surfaces can oc- cur. Without proper contact between the housing and liner, fretting damage will drastically reduce the life expectancy of the liner. Although the upfront cost is greater, the investment required for complete pillow block replacement versus the cost of replacing the liner alone, which is the most common maintenance practice, should be compared in order to ex- pose the hidden cost of incomplete hydrodynamic bearing maintenance.
The rugged, dependable Dodge® Motorized Torque-Arm II (MTA II) has expanded to use severe duty Baldor-Reliance® motors, as well as standard duty motors, providing customers with heavy duty solutions for tough applications. Assembled to order, these packages can minimize assembly time on site, allowing the facility to be up and running faster. Flexible designs are also available with stock IEC motor adapters to accommodate globally available motors.

“ABB delivered its second consecutive quarter of revenue growth. Underlying operational performance improved considering last year’s communicated correction of insurance reserves,” said ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer. “We are seeing the first signals of market stabilization in some process industries, as well as some growth signals in early-cycle businesses. Power Grids’ order pattern for the quarter reflects a Chinese HVDC project, which was awarded in Q1 2016. Overall, underlying demand in China remains positive.”
When completed, the Permanent Canal Closures and Pumps (PCCP) project will be able to pump over 55 billion liters per day from New Orleans’ three outfall canals into Lake Pontchartrain, preventing another natural disaster like the devastating Hurricane Katrina In August of 2005, a brutal storm hit the Gulf Coast of the United States burying more than 80 percent of the city of New Orleans under 15 feet of water and debris. With more than 1,800 dead and millions of people left homeless, Hurricane Katrina is considered one of the worst natural disasters in US history.
Our Baldor Electric gear plant in Greenville, South Carolina has achieved Zero Landfill status in 2017. The term “Zero Landfill” means that 100% of the plant’s waste is diverted from the landfill and converted into recycled products or used for energy. This plant, celebrating its 40th anniversary in Greenville this year, is the global producer of Dodge® shaft mounted speed reducers. In late 2016, this team began exploring ways to increase its recycling efforts in response to a company initiative to achieve a 20% waste reduction by 2020. The team, led by Mike Trench, Maintenance Manager, and Roy Patterson, Maintenance Engineer, saw the initiative as a way to lower the plant’s carbon footprint, increase recycling, and decrease the amount of waste that was sent to a landfill.
For a lower cost, highly efficient solution for low speed, high horsepower, vertical pumping applications, think smaller. Using planetary gearing and standard, low-pole-count motors offer a very good alternative to traditional high-pole-count motors. This article will examine design criteria and advantages of vertical gearmotor technology as well as applications that could benefit from this technology.
United for Efficiency, or U4E, is a public-private partnership led by the United Nations Environment Program (UN Environment) and other major agencies, including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The program essentially aims to move countries and economies to become energy-efficient in collaboration with international companies. This includes helping governments develop and implement national and regional strategies to improve their energy efficiency – an important element in the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, agreed in 2016, to limit the pace of climate change.

Focusing on the same horsepower (hp), revolutions per minute (rpm), frame size and voltage is not enough. Ignoring five motor application considerations discussed in this article will cause additional downtime faster than expected.
Machine integration and automation should be planned in the conceptual phases of a machine project, says Baldor’s Kirkpatrick. "The amount of integration will usually have a considerable effect on the required wiring—control, power, communications—which must be accommodated in the design and installation phases," he says.
Downtime is often blamed on poor maintenance or lack of maintenance. Undoubtedly proper maintenance is important in keeping your conveyor in uptime and not downtime. However, there are many operators with exceptional maintenance practices who struggle with downtime. A contributing and often overlooked cause of downtime is the conveyor’s bearing selection.
Distributed intelligence has made motion control a much more valuable aspect of automation technology. Motion advances that employ smart actuators—from collaborative robots that can move like humans to modular platforms that simplify machine design—enable OEMs to produce machines that are faster, more accurate and less prone to breakdowns.
